American Cabaret Theatre

Surrounded by the splendor and 19th Century old world charm of the recently refurbished historic Athenaeum in downtown Indianapolis, the American Cabaret Theatre offers year round musical cabaret theatre productions. With all the characteristics of a Broadway production --including orchestra, costumes, and high quality talent- the professional troupe utilizes popular songs and original concepts to create themes and stories that are fast-paced, highly entertaining, and memorable. This style of theatre –called “rough, tough, and funny” by The New York Times and praised by patrons and critics from Chicago to Denver to Toronto to Tampa Bay, along with a casual, intimate table-and-chair/optional cocktail atmosphere makes for a delectable night out.
In the early 1970s, Yale Drama School graduate Claude McNeal launched a summer workshop in Connecticut expressly to look into cabaret, a style of theatre that attempts to both reflect and comment on a society’s cultural and philosophical conscience through music, dance, visuals, and drama. The result was the founding by McNeal of American Cabaret Theatre, whose national headquarters is at the Historic Athenaeum Building in Indianapolis. ACT has an array of educational programming through a collaboration with IUPUI, and ACT shows have been performed throughout the country, in Boston; Los Angeles; Denver; Lake Placid, New York; St. Petersburg; French Lick, Indiana; New York City; Michigan; Tampa, Florida; and most recently Branson, Missouri.
