The mission of Art Spaces, Inc. is to estabilish a collection of public outdoor sculpture in Terre Haute and the surrounding region of the Wabash Valley.
Art Spaces grew out of the dedicated efforts of community and business leaders, arts professionals and interested citizens who began meeting in 2003 to focus on ways the arts could impact the economic development and quality of life in Terre Haute and the surrounding region of the Wabash Valley. As of 2008, the Art Spaces, Inc. collection currently includes five public sculptures in various locations in the city of Terre Haute, IN: a steel sculpture, “Tree” by Mark Wallis, located on Memorial Stadium Grounds at Wabash and Brown Avenues; a sculpture of Indiana Limestone by Lauren Ewing entitled “Composite House for Terre Haute”, located in Gilbert Park on Wabash Ave. at 14 1/2 St.; one work by Mexican artist Leonardo Nierman, which is located on the campus of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology; “Spirit of Space” by Bob Emser, an addition to the permanent collection of the Swope Art Museum on 7th Street; and “Gatekeeper”, a sculpture of brushed staineless steel and rose granite by Sally Rogers, installed on the Arts Corridor at Vigo County Public Library at Poplar and 7th Streets. Art Spaces is in a unique position to serve as a bridge between the arts and economic development, and will continue to work with other groups and organizations already active in the City to create a unique collection of public outdoor sculpture for Terre Haute that will positively impact the city, its residents and visitors for years to come.
