| Description |
| Within the construction of images, the processes of mediums, the hand authoring representation, there are spaces created. Mediums overlap, or give way; distances form between the representation and the real; images become disconnected from people, from the land, from local culture and memory. My practice has been to work in these spaces, to understand the disconnections, the structures by which they are created and sustained, beginning with my hand as an image-maker and the processes of the mediums. Representation of the land in particular is synonymous with the physical use of the land; as we are apart from the land, so is the photograph a means of creating more distance.
My photographic practice has been to visibly leave traces of my hand in the construction of my images such that there is an inherent awareness to the author, the manipulation of space, the medium, and memory. I photograph small-scale constructed sets built only for the lens to appear as documents; I want to subvert the veracity of the photograph.
A large part of my practice derives from appropriation of cultural artifacts, which I deconstruct and re-present in a new context. My source materials span decades of photographic and cultural history; as the mediums change, each carries its own cultural connotations. Similarly, each artifact bears signs of physical age, which denotes another history of use and decay.
I am proposing a mode of representation that is rooted in an awareness to the hand of the maker and the construction of images, an affinity for memory rather than history, and a connection to the land. |
| Background |
| I have a BFA in Photography from the Herron School of Art, where I developed a process that spans media from drawing and photography to video, installation, and performance. Awards from Herron include the Jefferey Bratton Memorial Scholarship for Photography and the Louise Fulton/Indianapolis Museum of Art Scholarship. I recently was awarded a grant from the Arts Council of Indianapolis for their Picture Windows project, a store-front installation space in downtown Indianapolis. |
