Celebrating our 51st season, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra is a paid group of professional musicians. The musicians and the organization as a whole believe that music has universal appeal and enriches lives. We serve a broad cross-section of the population in East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio. Therefore, we strive to expand our audience, broaden our financial support and improve communication with the public. We present programming that appeals to a variety of interests and that stimulates and educates. We continue our commitment to quality music while serving the community as an educational organization.
As our local school systems continue to reduce the amount of music taught in school, the RSO feels a duty to offer students access to the professional symphony orchestra in their own hometown. By providing an experience of live musical performance to these young audiences, we hope to plant the seeds of music appreciation that will develop into a lifelong love and support for the arts. Children are not the only focus of our education, however. The general misconception that ticket sales cover the budget of an organization such as a symphony orchestra is widely held and without the assistance of government agencies and private foundations, the music could not be heard. Not even half of the required operating budget is covered by ticket sales. Subsequently, there is also education necessary to let audiences know that their donations are needed and put to good use.
